Roe Applauds Grants Awarded to East Tennessee Law Enforcement

WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.) released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Justice announced multiple grants amounting to $94,479 were awarded to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Johnson City Police Department, Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, Kingsport Police Department, Morristown Police Department and Greene County Sheriff’s Office:

“Ensuring our law enforcement officers have the most current equipment and technology they need when serving East Tennessee plays a vital role in keeping our communities safe. I am pleased to see a strong federal investment made in our local law enforcement. These funds will be used to purchase new technology and equipment to help the sheriffs and police officers across the First District continue the good work they are already doing.”

The following amounts were awarded to each department:


  • Washington County Sheriff’s Office: $11,266

  • Johnson City Police Department: $16,364

  • Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office: $19,191

  • Kingsport Police Department: $23,540

  • Morristown Police Department: $13,558

  • Greene County Sheriff’s Office: $10,560


Note: These grants are a part of the Fiscal Year 2019 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne JAG) Program. The program was created to help states and local communities prevent and control crime. In February 2019, H.J.Res. 31, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2019 appropriated $423.5 million for Byrne JAG grants.
