CBD Oil: What's legal in Tennessee?

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Nearly 2 dozen convenience stores were shut down by the TBI for selling gummies with CBD oil in Middle Tennessee last month. Later on, the District Attorney dropped the charges. So what's legal and illegal when it comes to CBD oil?

Anne Hack, from Maryville, distributed CBD oil.

"Some people were confused about where it came from,"

she said.

Hack said, while CBD oil comes from cannabis, it's not the same plant used for marijuana. Instead it comes from hemp. They both have CBD, and that's where the confusion lies.

"And often times when people hear cannabis, they think it's all one, but it's not,"

Hack said.

CBD can only legally be distributed from hemp, which is made of less than 0.3 percent THC.

"So anybody looking for an altered state of mind, there's no reason to turn to CBD. Because that's not going to happen,"

she said.

"It's that anti-anxiety effect and you might feel a little bit relaxed, and a little bit better able to sleep. But it's certainly not a high,"

Hack added.

Experts said it can be used to relieve pain. But some said the law still needs to be more clear.

"We've got a lot of work to do and hurdles to overcome to get there,"

Phil LaFoy, a pharmacist at Blount Discount Pharmacy said.
