KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Fountain City Lions Club is planning a new Concert in the Park series beginning in May. The dates for the free concerts on Fridays in the park are:

  • May 11
  • June 8
  • July 13
  • August 10

Members of the Lions Club said they hope to build a stronger sense of community by hosting the free concerts. The music will be a variety of styles. The Fountain City Lions Club plans to soon release more details on the musical acts on its Facebook page.

Lions Club member Kelly Long said,

"The concerts will start about 7 p.m., but you can come on out earlier, around 6 p.m. We're gonna have vendors and food trucks."

The organization has long maintained the park for the public in Fountain City, at a cost of about $25,000 per year. Vandalism has cost the club an extra $2,000 in the past year or so. Club leaders said they hope a renewed sense of pride will deter vandalism and encourage people to help keep the park in good condition.

Treasurer Bob Davis said of ongoing expenses,

"We have supplies. We have items of repair to the swings and playground equipment. We have to buy supplies for the lake."

People can support the park by renting the main gazebo or the Lions Club building on the property for special events. They can also join the group as a member and can give donations. Volunteer days also offer the opportunity to help with tree trimming and other maintenance tasks.
