NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) - St. Thomas Health announced it’s offering free screening mammograms for uninsured women over the age of 40.

Premier Radiology is offering the screenings during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Free mammograms will be offered at their Bellevue location (5700 Temple Road, Suite 102) and Lennox Village location (6130 Nolensville Pike, Suite 102).

The hospital says more than 40,000 women die each year from breast cancer. However, early detection can significantly increase survival chances.

According to a 2012 report from the American Cancer Society, 29 percent of insured women and 68 percent of uninsured women are not getting mammograms. They recommend the following:

  • Women ages 40-44 should have the choice to start annual breast cancer screenings with mammograms
  • Women ages 45-54 should get mammograms every year
  • Women ages 55 and older should switch to getting mammograms every two years or continue yearly screening
