A letter went out to the parents of students at John Sevier Elementary School, saying a case of the mumps has been reported.

The letter was prompted by a parent's report. The principal was notified by a parent that members of her family were exhibiting the symptoms consistent with mumps.

There still isn't a confirmed case, only a report. The Blount County Health Department is working with the school.

Symptoms of mumps include fever, headache, swollen salivary glands causing puffy cheeks and swollen jaw, weakness or fatigue and loss of appetite.

Mumps can be prevented with a vaccine.

The CDC reports just over 1600 of mumps from this year.
