A new mural is coming to Knoxville.

The Knoxville City Council voted Tuesday night to pay up to $151,000 to Seattle artist Addison Karl to paint a mural on the Market Square Garage.

The mural will feature local faces.

"It's a great tool for us to use. People look for cultural amenities like this,"
said Rick Emmett, Downtown Coordinator for the City of Knoxville.

"There's a lot of cool things from having public art downtown,"
he said.

Liza Zenni, executive director of the Arts & Culture Alliance, said the alley between Union and Wall avenues "cried out" for public art.

Karl was picked in a process that began in September with proposals from more than 40 artists. The list was winnowed to 13 before Karl was selected.

He is to be in Knoxville in May looking for subjects to feature on the mural.
