Future of Knox County school funding deal uncertain

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - The Knox County mayor and the chair of the Knox County School Board are at odds over how to move forward on funding for school programs.

The school board has not added the recent funding offer from Mayor Tim Burchett to its upcoming agenda. The offer would split the cost of staving off cuts to Project GRAD, magnet schools and talented and gifted programs, thanks to one-time money from the county and the school system.

"This was an offer put forth by Chairman Smith of commission and I just assumed that commission would vote on this first and take it up, since it was not a proposal on our side,"
said Knox County School Board Chair Patti Bounds.

But Burchett's office said it is waiting on input from the school system, including metrics to provide accountability on contracts for the programs.

Bounds said she just learned yesterday that metrics were one of the hold-ups. She said since they don't have a defined services contract yet, metrics would be "putting the cart before the horse."
